Romancing the West Autumn Dinner Show at Cougar Mountain Ranch
The time traveling documentary concert Romancing the West comes to the Carriage House at Cougar Mountain Ranch for an Autumn dinner show, Friday October 25th, at 6:00 pm, the first show in the 2024 annual tour. In April of 2013, singer/songwriter Christina Lynn Martin and Cowboy Poet and Balladeer Butch Martin co-produced Romancing the West and set out to tell the human story of over 250 years of the people of the American West joined by many renowned artists including classical rock performer Martin Gerschwitz of Iron Butterly who has performed with the show ever since. The show, now in its 11th year, features the music of every era from the Old West to jazz, big band, and Butch, Christina, and Martin performing the original music and poetry in the show.
Romancing the West takes the audience on an epic journey through the trials, tribulations, and triumphs of the people of the West and celebrates their diverse cultures, lives, and legacies. The story is told in historic photographs, rare film, video, live poetry, and original music written by Christina, songs about the West including “City of Roses” (Portland), “Columbia” (Columbia River), “Oh Oregon” written for the 150th birthday of Oregon, “Sunset Over Jacksonville” and “California”. Butch recites master poems like “The Ballad of William Sycamore” and the oldest known Cowboy poem “Lasca”. The show includes a moving tribute to veterans, a majestic musical tribute to National Parks and hometown America.
Gerschwitz, who resides in Germany, returns every spring and fall and lends his rich vocals and masterful piano playing, which has filled stadiums around the world, and brings to life many eras in the show, including the turbulent 1960s when Martin performs a prelude of Johan Sebastian Bach as the intro to Iron Butterfly’s “En Da Gadda Da Vida”.
Chef James Daw will prepare Tri-Tip and Chicken Dinner with Chocolate Cake for Dessert.
The Martins’ Mission continues to be “to foster love and respect for our fellow man and the love of this land by telling the sometimes painful story of Western Expansionism and celebrating the diverse cultures whose stories continue to inform and inspire our Nation and our world.” The couple make their home in a log cabin in Applegate Valley at Cougar Mountain Ranch surrounded by kids and grandkids, where they also record their weekly radio show Whittler’s Corner and its history radio show within a show “Time Travels through the American West”, airing throughout Oregon and Wyoming.

Romancing the West® The story of Western Expansionism is told in historical photographs, rare film, video, live poetry, and original music written by Christina. Her songs romance and educate about the West, including “City of Roses” (Portland), “California,” “Columbia” (Columbia River), and “Oh Oregon,” which was written for the 150th birthday of Oregon. Within the show is a moving tribute to veterans, a majestic musical tribute to National Parks, and to hometown America with video and music featuring the Applegate Valley and Jacksonville.
This April marked eleven consecutive years of touring the show in National Trail Centers, concert series, and historic theaters having just returned from concerts in California, Nevada, and Butch’s beloved Wind River Valley in Wyoming. There, he had a Morgan Ranch on the Wind River for many years in the 1970s–1990s, a treasured time in his life spent with closest friends such as Darrell Winfield—of Marlboro fame—and game Warden Kay Bowles.
The Martin’s Mission continues to be “to foster love and respect for our fellow man and the love of this land by telling the sometimes painful story of Western Expansionism and celebrating the diverse cultures whose stories continue to inform and inspire our Nation and our world.” The couple make their home in a log cabin in the Applegate Valley at Cougar Mountain Ranch, surrounded by kids and grandkids, where they also record their weekly radio show, Whittler’s Corner, and its history segment, “Time Travels through the American West.”

The two-hour show spans decades, from the Native tribes and the free trappers to the Spanish Missions and Gold Rush, the Indian Wars, through the industrial revolution and the Great Depression, World Wars and The Sixties to the present day.
Romancing the West Legacy tours nationally in theaters, with its highlights version, “Time Travels Through the American West,” appearing in interpretive centers, museums, and schools. The show is produced by husband and wife team, Writer/Composer/Producer Christina Lynn Martin and co-producer Cowboy Poet and Balladeer Garnet “Butch” Martin, who frequently share the stage with classical/rock legend Martin Gerschwitz (Iron Butterfly and The Animals) and perform the show’s original music and signature songs of the eras together.
This multimedia presentation captures the significant times over the last two centuries, from the beauty of the Native people’s culture—when the West lay untouched by time—to the modern west. The show appeals to all ages, presenting history in a way that is entertaining and educational for all ages and boldly remembers the tragic while celebrating the triumphant episodes in Western History with a focus on civil rights, cultural respect and nature conservation. Romancing the West® delivers an epic journey through decades of social and political change to celebrate the pioneering human spirit and diverse legacy of the American West.

Romancing the West®
The critically acclaimed “Romancing the West®” time traveling documentary concert comes to The Gallery at Twin Lakes for a special family evening show on Friday, July 3rd, 7:30 pm.
Romancing the West® has played to standing ovations in theaters throughout the West. History style documentary meets live concert performance in this unique and epic experience, revisiting 24 decades of history in two riveting music-filled hours. All Star Line-up brings to life 240 years of the American West decade by decade in the music of every era, from Native rattles to ragtime to rock. With live music, rare film, historic photos, and video, “Romancing the West®” brings to life decades of social and political change, exploring both the tragic and the triumphant episodes of history to celebrate the pioneering human spirit and diverse legacy of the American West. From tribes of the Northern Plateau and Russian ships exploring the Western Coast, and the Spanish building of the Mission Chain to Western boomtowns, the Trail of Tears through The Great Depression and World War ll, the prosperous post War era, the turbulent 1960’s, and the political polarization of the turn of the Century to the present, audiences experience the real stories of the people of the Great West told in narration, imagery and the musical style of their times.
Award winning recording artists, including Martin Gerschwitz of Iron Butterfly, Sons of the Oregon Trail (Cowboy Poet Butch Martin and fellow Balladeer Skip Bessonette), Christina Lynn Martin, singer/songwriter John Elliott, The Blue Delilahs, and Chuck Girard of Lovesong, perform an original score and classic favorites for a multi-genre and multi-generational experience.
