Hamley Steakhouse
Since 1883, the Hamley name has been synonymous with quality. Our mission is to carry on this proud tradition by providing excellent food and outstanding service.
The concept of Hamley Steakhouse took root in early 2006 and soon became a reality, finding its home in a prominent and historical location next to the Hamley Western Store. A rich and unique list of businesses occupied this site dating back to the Umatilla County Courthouse circa 1869. During construction every detail was attended to in bringing to life an authentic turn-of-the-century look and feel. Dedicated local contractors and craftsmen worked tirelessly to complete the construction in an amazing nine months, some calling it a difficult yet successful “birth.” Hamley Steakhouse opened to rave reviews in June 2007.
Located in the heart of downtown Pendleton, home to the historic Pendleton Round-Up, Hamley Steakhouse is a restaurant for the ages. Every square foot has been meticulously designed to embody the American Old West. Visitors will be taken back in time as they experience the late eighteenth-century design and top-of-the-line craftsmanship. Hamley Steakhouse is truly an experience you’ll never forget! Some of the highlights are:
- Original eighteenth-century bars anchoring both saloons
- A majestic show kitchen capped with a hand built and custom forged Barrel “H” copper hood
- An original bank wall from the era of Billy the Kid
- Authentic tin ceilings encased in custom designed coffered woodwork
- A custom built, native stone stairway leading down to the impressive Hamley Wine Cellar with shelving built from original oak barrel staves and filled with Hamley Specialty Wine
- Eighteenth-century cabinetry from Berlin, Germany
- Custom quarter sawn oak woodwork
- Countless authentic Old West artifacts throughout

Pendleton Roundup
The world Famous Pendleton Round-Up is held the second full week in September of each year. The first Pendleton Round-Up was to be “a frontier exhibition of picturesque pastimes, Indian and military spectacles, cowboy racing and bronco busting for the championship of the Northwest.” It turned out to be that and more.
For the initial show, all stores closed. “The largest crowd in Pendleton’s history,” 7,000 strong, showed up for the first show on September 29, 1910, a newspaper writer reported. “The words ‘Pendleton’ and Round-Up’ are on the lips of thousands and will continue to be for months and years to come… The Round-Up is a whirlwind success.” Souvenir program from The 1913 Round-Up. Grow it did.
Two decades later, patrons showed up from 36 states and eight foreign countries. Following two years in which the Round-Up was not held, because of World War II, attendance climbed again, eventually reaching 50,000 or more for the four-day show. “Success bred success and Round-Up stayed in high gear,” says the book “Let ‘er Buck! A history of Pendleton Round-Up.”
Native Tradition at the Pendleton Round-Up
Native Americans have been an integral component of the Pendleton Round-Up since its inception. Members of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation – the Umatilla, Cayuse, and Walla Walla Indians who live on a reservation eight miles east ofPendleton -host a grand tribal village that annually includes more than 300 teepees. Indians from around the Northwest travel to Pendleton where they gather in the village to visit with friends and relatives, take part in the Happy Canyon Pageant and dance in the arena during rodeo matinees. Additionally, the Round-Up serves as the forum for two Indian beauty contests – the American Indian Beauty Contest, which is held Friday morning prior to the Westward Ho! parade on Main Street in Pendleton, and the Junior Indian Beauty Contest, held Thursday morning at the Roy Raley Park adjacent to the Round-Up grounds. Another key event during the week is a Round-Up Pow Wow dance competition, which occurs at 9 a. m. on Saturday in the Round-Up arena

Hamley Saddle Co.
The Hamley family history goes back many generations to Cornwall England, where the trade of saddle and leather craftsmanship had been passed down through many generations of Hamleys. The American history of the Hamleys began in 1850 when William Hamley moved his family from England to Ripon, Wisconsin, where he opened a small leather goods store. William’s two sons, John James (J.J.) and Henry Hamley set out from Wisconsin in 1883 with two railroad tickets and $10.00 in cash, bound for Ashton, South Dakota where they established Hamley and Co. After three successful years, regional crop failures and depression forced them to relocate and move to Kendrick, Idaho.
Henry Hamley passed away in 1894. Business was good, but a couple of major building fires left the Hamleys no choice but to relocate. In 1905 J.J. relocated to Pendleton, Oregon and set up shop on the Oregon Trail in the same building that exists to this day. Hamley was known as a harness and saddle maker, but the business soon developed around its saddles and became known throughout the west as the maker of “the finest saddles man could ride.”
Pendleton Wool Co.
Pendleton’s Pacific Northwest woolen mills are a testament to the quest for quality established by our founder five generations ago in 1863. The intricate jacquard blankets and array of wool fabrics we produce have earned a reputation on par with the greatest mills around the world. For more than 140 years, we’ve invested in the people and the technology needed to achieve the beautiful color and original patterns that are the hallmarks of our family enterprise.
“We live where we work, and we love what we do. Many Pendleton employees have been with the company for generations. A third of our Washougal mill employees have been with us more than 25 years! It’s this level of commitment, talent and experience plus first-rate technology that make it possible for us to weave wool fabrics of such amazing quality. Come see for yourself how we do it. Stop by to say ‘hello’ and take the tour at one of our mills.”

Travel Pendleton – Underground City Tour
Pendleton Underground Tours is a non-profit corporation that started in 1989, giving tours of Pendleton’s red light district. The tour was very controversial because part of the subject matter is about gambling, the Chinese, bootlegging and prostitution. In 1990, after opening the “Cozy Rooms” bordello, Chinese jails and the Opium Den, the tour became even more questionable. The history of legal and illegal businesses operating in the same area for over 100 years makes the tour unique and like no other tour anywhere. The history of the Chinese in Eastern Oregon and their role in building the West is also unique. The tour is entertaining and interesting to all ages from 6 years old to 95 years old there is something for every member of the family.
Pendleton Underground Tours has become Eastern Oregon’s #1 year around tourist attraction. A tour that people once questioned has now been featured on television and radio shows around the world. The great success and popularity of P.U.T. is based on the wonderful well-trained and educated historians who guide tourists back in time to learn history that isn’t taught in school, but was very much a part of the early west and the lives of our ancestors. Nothing is artificial or fabricated. Experience the Real Old West at the Pendleton Underground Tours.
You’ll learn history that no one wanted to talk about.
All properties are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Pendleton Underground Tours’ properties are in what was once the red light district of Pendleton. The buildings on the tour have been maintained, true to the original state, allowing the visitor to see the sidewalks and basalt-rock tunnels the way they were constructed pre-1890’s. This special authenticity adds to their uniqueness, making the tours what they are today.
